About Jotunheimen national park
The national park has high peaks, lush mountain valleys and mountain lakes where you can try your luck at fishing.
The National Park
Jotunheimen is an eldorado for mountaineering enthusiasts, with all Norwegian peaks above 2300m. Galdhøpiggen (2469 m.) is the highest and most visited, while Hurrungane offers legendary climbing peaks, with Store Skagastølstind as the spearhead. Mountain tourism in Jotunheimen started already 200 years ago, and today there is a well-developed network with accommodation options at well-known tourist cabins such as Gjendebu, Glitterheim, Memurubu, Skogadalsbøen, Olavsbu and Fannaråkhytta. But there are also untouched zones without marked routes, where you have to find your own way.
The national park has high peaks, lush mountain valleys and mountain lakes where you can try your luck at fishing. Emerald-green Gjende is considered by many to be the finest lake, and many people come here every year to take the famous mountain hike over Besseggen. Many mountain plants have their highest altitude records here, and the steep mountain slopes are home to several birds of prey. The landscape bears traces of an older hunting culture with animal graves and dwellings, and grazing and herding have long traditions.

In Breheimen you will find both some of the most rainy and the driest areas in the country. The area ranges from almost sea level to well over 2,000 m. The landscape has been shaped by glaciers, landslides and other geological processes over hundreds of thousands of years. Today you will find everything from lush valleys to barren high mountains and glaciers, and Breheimen stands out as one of our most varied national parks.
Jostedalsbreen National Park offers nature experiences you will never forget. Seeing the blue ice and learning how the landscape is shaped by ice, rock and water makes you feel small in the big picture. High mountain peaks rise from the large glacial plateau. Jostedalsbreen offers silence and a starry sky, while it is never completely quiet. In the green and lush valleys, grazing animals have shaped the landscape for many generations. On warm summer days, the slopes below the glacier offer birdsong, the hum of insects and the splendor of flowers.
