Our waterfalls

In Utladalen, flowing water roars and roars. Waterfalls cascade from the mountainside, and the Utla River flows with power and speed through the entire valley all the way down to Årdalsvatnet.

  • Hjellefossen

    The first waterfall you come across in Utladalen is the impressive Hjellefossen. The waterfall is located in the Hjelledøla River, a tributary of the Utla River. It is the lowest waterfall in the valley, and descends into Utladalen by the Hjelle farm.

  • Avdalsfossen

    The other large waterfall you will encounter in Utladalen is the beautiful Avdalsfossen. Avdalsfossen is located in the Gravdøla River, a tributary of the Utla, and is among the highest waterfalls in the valley.

  • Vettisfossen

    The queen of the valley is Vettisfossen. The highest unregulated waterfall in Northern Europe. Vettisfossen has a free fall of 275 meters down from Vettismorki, a mountain plateau with ponds and old pine forest. The waterfall is part of the Morka-Koldedøla watercourse, which originates in Morka-Koldedalen and flows down into Utladalen and into the Utla River. In Norway, only Mardalsfossen, Ringedalsfossen and Skykkjefossen have a longer free fall. Vettisfossen was protected in 1924 after a private agreement with the Norwegian Nature Conservation Association for protection the previous year. The waterfall is a popular tourist destination.

  • Høljafossen

    Høljafossen is an impressive waterfall, and a popular place to stop to take pictures or take a dip in the icy meltwater.

    Høljafossen is the smallest of the other large waterfalls in Utladalen, but still considered one of the most beautiful. The blue-green meltwater surrounded by dark rock and green, lush vegetation guarantees that you will get nice pictures if you stop here.
